About the Valley Shore Chorus

Valley Shore Chorus is a women's chorus that rehearses weekly to sing, perform, socialize and learn about vocal production and barbershop harmony. After receiving its official charter from Sweet Adelines International in 1977, the chorus became popular around the state, entertaining a wide variety of audiences with its unique blend of barbershop harmony.

Our goal is to sing! We love performing for everyone and anyone, and our ringing barbershop chords can be heard at many notable locations around the state, including Gillette Castle, Wadsworth Atheneum, Garde Arts Center in New London, the Katherine Hepburn Cultural Arts Center and Theater groundbreaking, the Saybrook Stroll, Wadsworth Glen Strawberry Festival, Middletown's Martin Luther King Jr. Day Celebration, Hartford's Salvation Army, UConn Medical Center and the American Cancer Society Relay for Life.

Need entertainment for your next event? Consider the Valley Shore Chorus for your upcoming function. The chorus frequently performs at local fairs and festivals, weddings, private parties, corporate banquets, business gatherings, fraternal organization meetings, retirement homes and senior centers, hospitals, schools, restaurants and malls. Click here for information.

In addition to sharing our music with others, another great passion of ours is learning more about the art of acapella singing. Vocal instruction is a regular part of chorus rehearsals, and a very important component of the chorus experience. A couple of times a year, we will get coaching from a visiting master in the art of barbershop, where we learn many fabulous tricks of the trade.

CompetitionIn the spring of every year, Valley Shore Chorus participates in the Region 1 chorus competition in Region City, State. Competitions are a special time for quartets and choruses from our region to come together to sing for each other, and get some constructive feedback from a panel of judges. The winners of the regional competition in both quartet and chorus categories get to travel to International Competition, which is held in the fall in a city selected each year. In 2011, International Competition will be held in Houstan, TX. Click here to learn more.

Most choruses have a number of members who form their own vocal quartets in addition to singing with the chorus. Valley Shore Chorus currently is home to a number of wonderful quartets, and we are very proud of them! Click here to see our quartet section to learn more about them.

Valley Shore Chorus is a chapter of Sweet Adelines, International, a non-profit organization of approximately 30,000 members in choruses and quartets, worldwide. The Headquarters is in Tulsa, Oklahoma.
